Sakharov, Andrei

  1. A nuclear physicist in the Soviet Union , Sakharov helped develop their first hydrogen bomb . In the late 1960s, he became an outspoken critic of the arms race and of Soviet repression. He and his wife were exiled within the Soviet Union for protesting. In 1975, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace.
