San Juan Mountains

It was my reward for suffering through a five-hour traverse between two backcountry cabins in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains.

I was huddled in a tent at 11,700 feet in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, and as sheets of rain and gusts of wind shook the nylon walls, I thought of the two llamas standing outside with nothing to shelter them but a stunted spruce tree.

When traveling southbound, as the Strawbridges did, thru-hikers need to start late enough for the passes in Montana to clear, yet move fast enough to get through the south San Juan Mountains before winter weather returns.

In 2018, the Thelma Hut opened in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, just half a mile from Highway 550 south of Red Mountain Pass, and not far from Silverton Mountain.

During my stay at a miners' boarding-house in the San Juan Mountains a heavy snow-fall came to a close.
