1. a joint in which two timbers or other structural members are fitted together with long end laps of various forms and held in place with bolts, straps, keys, fishplates, etc., to resist tension or compression.
2. (in welding) a butt joint between two pieces beveled on their meeting surfaces.

  1. A joint made by cutting or notching the ends of two pieces correspondingly and strapping or bolting them together. Also called scarf joint.

  2. Either of the correspondingly cut or notched ends that fit together to form such a joint.
