"obscene literature," 1876, with -logy "treatise, study" + Greek skat-, stem of skor (genitive skatos) "excrement," from PIE *sker- "excrement, dung" (cf. Latin stercus "dung"), literally "to cut off;" see shear (v.), and cf. shit (v.). Related: Scatological (1886).
