Schongauer

Schongauer used curved shading and greatly developed the technique.

For a time he followed the methods of another German artist, Schongauer, but finally he went forth to try his luck alone.

Of the oldest school the most important engraver is Martin Schongauer (1420-88).

At Colmar he saw the masterpieces and the brothers of the "admirable Martin," as he always calls Schongauer.
