1880–85, Americanism; earlier seecatchie (collective or plural) < Russian sekachí, plural of sekách mature male fur seal, hog, or wild boar, literally, chopper, cutter (alluding to the tusks of such animals), equivalent to sek-, stem of sechʾ to cut, slash + -ach noun suffix; cf. holluschick
