Shev·ard·na·dze (shě'vərd-näd'zə) Georgian political leader who became head of state in 1992 and president in 1995. Formerly a Soviet politician and diplomat, he served as foreign minister (1985-1990) under Mikhail Gorbachev, in which role he normalized the Soviet Union's relations with the West after the cold war.
