shipwreck  (n.)
c.1450, from ship (n.) + wreck. Earlier it meant "things cast up from a shipwreck" (c.1100). The verb is recorded from 1589. The earlier word for "shipwreck" in the modern sense was M.E. schipbreke, from O.E. scipbryce.
