The name implies 'the tearer' or 'render,' and she is also entitled 'the lady of Sept'—that is, of the star Sothis.
The twelve months completed, a new year began, whose birth was heralded by the rising of Sothis in the early days of August.
Astronomical data, especially the heliacal risings of Sothis recorded by dates of their celebration in the vague year.
Their year originally began when the rapid rising of the Nile coincided with the rising of the star Sirius, called by them Sothis.
We have already become acquainted with this Sothis period (p. 29 ff).
This period, measured thus by the heliacal rising of Sothis, is spoken of as the Sothic cycle.
Then followed, beginning like the rest with the beginning of a Sothis period, the rule of human kings.
The Egyptians worshipped the star as Sothis, and it was believed to be the abode of the soul of Isis.
The history of Egypt must comprise a definite number of Sothis periods.
Hence the priests of Lower Egypt commenced the reign of the seven great gods with the beginning of a Sothis period.
