There is an excess of spherical aberration in convex lenses; neither are the glasses well ground, or centered, or duly adjusted.
In reflectors the image is more or less distorted by “spherical aberration.”
A lens in which the spherical aberration is corrected is said to be aplanatic.
This wonderful lens is achromatic, and free from spherical aberration and distortion of image.
spherical aberration is overcome to a great extent by the use (in connection with the double convex) of a meniscus lens.
The spherical aberration of an object glass may be undercorrected or overcorrected.
And the correction is produced by the same plano-concave lens as that which corrects the spherical aberration.
This combination largely overcame the spherical aberration, and it gained immediate fame as the "Wollaston doublet."
Irradiation has also been ascribed to spherical aberration in the eye-lens and to diffraction of light at the pupil.
