–noun, plural -ma [-muh] .
(in ancient Greek drama) a choral ode, esp. in tragedy, divided into strophe and antistrophe: usually alternating with the epeisodion and, in the final ode, preceding the exodos.

Origin:
1860–65; < Gk stásimon, neut. of stásimos stopping, stationary, equiv. to stási(s) a standing (see stasis ) + -mos adj. suffix
