c.1225, from O.Fr. estrif, variant of estrit "quarrel, dispute, impetuosity," probably from Frank. *strid, from P.Gmc. *strido- "strife, combat" (cf. O.H.G. strit "quarrel, dispute"), related to O.H.G. stritan "to fight;" see stride.
