Origin:
1745–55, Americanism; < Narragansett (E sp.) msíckquatash boiled whole kernels of corn (c. Eastern Abenaki (F sp.) mesikoutar, equiv. to Proto-Algonquian *mes- whole + *-i⋅nkw- eye (hence, kernel) + *-ete⋅- be cooked (+ -w-) + *-ali pl. suffix)
