a pale-yellow, waxy, water-insoluble solid obtained from the fruit of certain sumacs, esp. Rhus succedanea, native to Japan and China: used chiefly in the manufacture of candles, furniture polishes, and floor waxes.
Also called Japan tallow, sumac wax.
