Tanjore

city, eastern Tamil Nadu state, southeastern India. It lies in the Kaveri (Cauvery) River delta, about 30 miles (50 km) east of Tiruchchirappalli. An early capital of the Chola (Cola) empire from the 9th to the 11th century, it was important during the Vijayanagar, Maratha, and British periods. It is now a tourist centre; attractions are the Brihadishvara Chola temple, a Vijayanagar fort, and the palace of Sarfoji, a Maratha prince. Industries include cotton mills, traditional handloom weaving, and the manufacture of vinas (South Indian stringed instruments). The city is the seat of Tamil University (1981) and has several other colleges.
