Czech červený, Serbo-Croatian cr̀ven, cr̀(v)ljen, Bulg chervén < Slavic *čṛvljen, orig. ptp. of *čṛviti to dye red, deriv. of *čṛvĭ worm, kermes (Serbo-Croatian cr̂v, Pol czerw, Russ chervʾ), a by-form of *čṛmĭ; cf. OCS chrĭmĭnŭ red; see crimson, vermilion
