Deng Xiao·ping (dŭng' shou'pĭng', shyou'-) Chinese political leader who was twice purged from the Communist Party (1967 and 1976) and twice rehabilitated (1973 and 1977) before gaining supreme power in China. He officially retired as head of state in November 1989.
