Far Tortuga by Peter Matthiessen – An incredible book in form and substance.

The local name for this turtle is tortuga blanca; it is sought for its meat.

They shortly after took possession of Tortuga, which they found to be a tropical region indeed, but no paradise.

Natives of the coastal lowlands tell of another "tortuga de la tierra" besides Geoemyda rubida.

We made it hot, and so they marooned us: me on a dry Tortuga cay, and him in an oarless boat.
