"trumpet," 1297, from O.Fr. trompe "long, tube-like musical wind instrument" (12c.), cognate with Prov. tromba, It. tromba, all probably from a Gmc. source (cf. O.H.G. trumpa and O.N. trumba "trumpet"), of imitative origin.
