city, eastern Karnataka (formerly Mysore) state, southern India. Tumkur lies at the foot of Devarayadurga Hill, which has a picturesque health resort at about 3,900 feet (1,190 m). The city, a road and rail centre, has a cluster of small-scale industries, which include a tool factory, soap works, and rice and oil mills. The chief crops grown in the surrounding area are millet, rice, and oilseeds. Pop. (1991 prelim.) city, 138,598.
