1400, from O.Fr. canon, from It. cannone "large tube," augmentive of L. canna (see cane). Cannon-fodder (1891) translates Ger. kanonenfutter (cf. Shakespeare's food for powder in I Hen. IV). Cannon-ball is from 1663.
