state university system consisting of 11 coeducational campuses in eight cities. In 1970 the University of Maryland comprised five campuses. The University of Maryland System was created in 1988 when a merger formed the current 11-campus system. Renamed the University System of Maryland in 1997, it is an academic and research institute with land-grant and sea-grant status. The main campus, University of Maryland, College Park, provides comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs and has research facilities that include seven libraries. Total enrollment at the main campus is about 33,000.
