O.E. upweard, upweardes from up (see up) + -weard (see -ward). Cf. M.L.G. upwart, M.Du. opwaert, M.H.G. ufwart. Phrase upward mobility first recorded 1949; mainly restricted to sociologists' jargon until 1960s.
