c.1325, from O.Fr. urine (12c.), from L. urina "urine," from PIE *ur- (cf. Gk. ouron "urine"), variant of base *awer- "to moisten, flow" (cf. Skt. var "water," Avestan var "rain," Lith. jures "sea," O.E. wær, O.N. ver "sea," O.N. ur "drizzling rain." Urinate is a 1599 back-formation from urination (early 15c.).
