What followed was a capital example of the Maori doctrine of utu, or compensation, the cause of so many wars and vendettas.

Having grievances against Datu Utu he shrewdly allied himself with the Spanish forces and rendered them valuable assistance.

It was incumbent therefore upon that redoubtable warrior to obtain utu for the slaughter of his relative.

This month was called Toe utu va, or digging again, and so named from the yam crop.

They trace the origin of the name of their place to Lautalatoa of Fiji, whose son, called Utu, resided there.
