1320, probably from O.Prov. veluet, from V.L. *villutittus, dim. of V.L. villutus "velvet," lit. "shaggy cloth," from L. villus "shaggy hair, nap of cloth, tuft of hair," probably a dialectal variant of vellus "fleece."
