Volkámann /'folk-"män,/ Alfred Wilhelm (1800–1877),German physiologist. Volkmann held a succession of academic posts in Germany, serving variously as professor of zoology, physiology, pathology, and anatomy. His description of the canals in compactbone which transmit blood vessels from the periosteum was published in 1863; the canals are now known as Volkmann's canals.
