The name Whitehall also applies to the cluster of short streets, squares, and governmental buildings adjoining the street. Whitehall has been the site of principal government offices since the establishment of Henry VIII's court at Whitehall Palace in the 1530s. The area's attractions include the Cenotaph war memorial, Downing Street (with the prime minister's residence), the Horse Guards Parade, Great Scotland Yard (the former home of the Metropolitan Police, now at New Scotland Yard), and the Banqueting House (1619-22), designed by Inigo Jones.
