Gorgas   (gôr'gəs)  Pronunciation Key 
American army surgeon who directed programs to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Havana, Cuba (1901), and in the panama canal Zone (1904-1906). The mosquito had been shown by Dr. Walter Reed and others to be responsible for the transmission of yellow fever.
