It is situated in the mountainous western fringe of the Sichuan Basin on the Qingyi River, about 80 miles (130 km) southwest of Chengdu, the provincial capital. The city is a communications centre near the crossing of two main routes-one running west to Kangding and to the Tibet Autonomous Region and another running north-south from Chengdu to the southwest. Averaging more than 200 days of precipitation per year, Ya'an has earned the nickname "The Raining Town."
