Where does the word glossary come from?

The word glossary comes from the Latin glossarium (a combination of gloss and -ary), which comes from Greek glossarion, a diminutive of glossa 'word which needs explanation'. The original meaning of Greek glossa was 'tongue', then 'word', and eventually 'to explain a word or text'.
