Dictionary.com Word FAQs

How can I find the best word for my purpose in a dictionary?

You might want to use a dictionary and thesaurus in combination. Let's say you are looking for a word meaning 'magician or miracle worker'. You can look up magician at Thesaurus.com and then you look up a word or two from the entry at Dictionary.com - for example, thaumaturge. You find that a thaumaturge is a 'performer of miracles or magic feats.' You double-check the word by putting it in a sentence and seeing if it makes sense: David Copperfield is a thaumaturge extraordinaire.
