What is the rule about i before e?
I before e except after c, or when sounded like ay, as in neighbor and weigh. This is a good rule to remember, but there are even more exceptions than those noted in the rhyme. Among them: caffeine, counterfeit, either, foreign, forfeit, heifer, heir, leisure, neither, protein, seize, sheik, sovereign, surfeit, their, veil, and weird. It's best just to commit these "weird" words to memory.
