Dictionary.com Word FAQs

Is there such a thing as Standard English anymore?

Yes, there is Standard English in contrast to non-standard, dialectal, foreign, archaic, and obsolescent usage. It cannot be defined except loosely as 'the English used by educated people'. There are those that divide this further into Standard American English and Standard British English. Books about usage are created to detail what is and what is not Standard English. Then there may be further division into Standard Written English and Standard Colloquial English. The subjects of usage that are discussed include grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary. The main reason to concern oneself with usage and Standard English is that you want what you write and speak to be taken seriously. Being concerned with these is not snobbery. Consistency and clarity in writing and speech help you attain your goals.
