What is colloquial vocabulary?
A colloquialism is any expression not used or acceptable in formal writing or speech. Slang, jargon, and idioms are examples of colloquial vocabulary but colloquial is also applied to cultivated conversation or generally informal speech. This label, when used in dictionaries, has come to have a somewhat negative connotation pertaining to uncultivated speech. Nowadays, few dictionaries use the label. With computers changing how we communicate, speech is increasingly informal and we are comfortable with idiomatic, slang, and other non-formal writing styles.
