thyroxine   (thī-rŏk'sēn', -sĭn)  Pronunciation Key 
An iodine-containing hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that increases the rate of cell metabolism and regulates growth. Thyroxine can also be made synthetically for treatment of hypothyroidism.
