Cyrus was a petty king of the shrunken Elamite province of Anshan, which had been conquered by the Persians.

He sprang, then, from Anshan, the immediate neighbour of Babylonia to the east.

Larsam, had measured forces with Anshan, but with no decisive issue.

Anshan is a district of Elam or Susiana, the exact position of which is still subject to much discussion.

Cyrus, King of Anshan, he called by name and designated him to rule over all the lands.
