Hangchow

Darkness fell again and swallowed up Peking and Hangchow, the great ports, the crowding junks, the noble civilization.

At Hangchow there lived a costermonger who understood how to keep oranges a whole year without letting them spoil.

The bay of Hangchow, as broad at its entrance as the Yangtsze estuary, forms the mouth of the Tsien-tang-kiang.

Many of these lived miserably as tenants on the farms of the gentry between Nanking and Hangchow.

The best position for a port of that kind is at a point just south of Chapu on the Hangchow Bay.
