Using the Toolbar
There are a number of different ways you can use the toolbar:
- Type a word directly into the search box and click any of the search buttons (Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, etc.)
- Highlight a word in the browser and click any of the search buttons (Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, etc.)
- Highlight a word and right-click. This will bring up a menu. Select any of the sources to look up the highlighted word (Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, etc.)
- Click the Dictionary.com logo button to the left of the search box. From here you can navigate directly to Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, Reference.com, All Reference, Web Search, Word of the Day, Spanish Word of the Day, or On This Day
Moving the Toolbar
You can drag the toolbar to a different location on your browser:
- Click on the vertical separator bar to the left of the Dictionary.com logo button
- Your cursor will appear as two vertical lines with arrows pointing in opposite directions on either side
- While holding down the mouse button, drag the toolbar to the desired location
If you can't move the toolbar and you are using Internet Explorer version 6.0+, you probably have the 'Lock the Toolbars' option selected. To change this option:
- Under the 'View' menu in your browser, select 'Toolbars'
- The 'Lock the Toolbars' option will be checked. Click it to toggle the lock off
Options
To change your display settings, clear your search history, make results appear in a new window, etc., click on the Dictionary.com logo button and the following list of options will appear:

- Display in New Window — Results are displayed in a new browser window, which opens in front of the current window
- Display in Current Window — Results are displayed in the current browser window. This is the default setting
- Show Dictionary Button — If this option is checked, the 'Dictionary Search' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show Thesaurus Button — If this option is checked, the 'Thesaurus Search' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show Encylopedia Button — If this option is checked, the 'Encylopedia Search' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show All Reference Button — If this option is checked, the 'All Reference Search' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show Web Search Button — If this option is checked, the 'Web Search' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show Word of the Day Button — If this option is checked, the 'Word of the Day' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show Spanish Word of the Day Button — If this option is checked, the 'Spanish Word of the Day' button will appear in the toolbar
- Show On This Day Button — If this option is checked, the 'On This Day' button will appear in the toolbar
- Display Buttons Only — Displays the icons without the accompanying text
- Display Buttons with Text — Displays the icons with accompanying text. This is the default setting
- Clear Search History — Clears the history that is automatically kept each time you use the toolbar to look up a word
- Help — Takes you to the Dictionary.com toolbar help section
- About Dictionary.com Toolbar — Takes you to the Dictionary.com Toolbar home page
- About ITX Corp — Takes you to the Web site of ITX Corp., developer of the toolbar software
- Uninstall the Dictionary.com Toolbar — Removes the toolbar from your browser. You will be prompted to verify that this is your intention. Select 'Yes' to uninstall the toolbar. Note that the toolbar will not disappear until you quit the browser and restart it
