interest

Intereses, the plural of interés, is used in two different ways. Firstly to refer to the interest you earn on your investments, in contexts where English uses the singular form:

los intereses devengados desde el día 1 de mayo de este año
interest accrued since 1 May this year

el pago de intereses de la deuda exterior
payment of interest on the foreign debt

You also use intereses to refer to commercial and political interests:

Hay intereses ecónomicos por medio.
There are financial interests involved.

Un conflicto de intereses puede surgir entre el poder ejecutivo y el poder judicial.
There may be a conflict of interest between the executive and the judiciary.

Se sabe que Francia tiene intereses en pozos petrolíferos en Irán.
France is known to have a stake in oil wells in Iran.
