The basic meaning of alma is your soul in a spiritual sense.

La cara es el espejo del alma.
The face is the mirror of the soul.

The word alma comes into many phrases relating to how you feel. In some of them the word heart would be used in English. Remember that alma is a feminine noun and so any adjectives have to agree with it.

Le agradezco con toda mi alma.
I thank you will all my heart.

his bosom buddy

Al ver la habitación, el alma se le cayó a los pies.
When she saw the room her heart sank word for word her heart fell to her feet.
