vivo, adjective:
alive, living; bright

The literal meaning of vivo is living or alive.

todos los seres vivos
all living beings

Es un milagro que siga* vivo.
It’s a miracle he’s still alive.

From this comes the metaphorical meaning of lively:

una discusión muy viva
a very lively discussion

One of its other extended meanings is bright. It often refers to colors or eyes:

sedas de colores vivos
brightly colored silks

Sus ojos vivos parecieron iluminarse.
Her bright eyes seemed to light up.
