Familiar has two main meanings. In one use, it’s like English familiar:
Su cara me es or me resulta familiar.
Your face looks familiar.
Apart from that meaning, it also describes things concerning your family or families in general. You often use it in the following phrases:
una empresa familiar
a family business
la vida familiar
family life
el domicilio familiar
the family home
