semestre, noun:
six-month period, half year

In English we’re used to thinking of a semester in relation to college courses. Spanish el semestre can mean this too, but it also has a more general meaning of a six-month period, or half year. In this meaning people often use it when talking about finance and economics. So, they often use with primer, segundo, último and próximofirst, second, last, and next.

Durante el primer semestre del año la empresa obtuvo un beneficio neto de 57 millones de dólares.
In the first half of the year, the company made a net profit of 57 million dollars.
