abrir, verb:
to open

You probably already know that abrir means to open.

La tienda abre a las diez.
The store opens at ten o’clock.

Abre la ventana.
Open the window.

But did you know that you also use this word to say turn on things like a faucet or the gas?

Abre la llave.
Turn on the faucet.

¿Abriste el gas?
Have you turned the gas on?
