entretanto, adverb:

One thing may be happening, and while it’s going on something else happens. That’s when entretanto, meanwhile, can help you link the two events:

La situación en Quilmes se encuentra bajo control. Entretanto la tensión se ha desplazado a otros barrios.
The situation in Quilmes is under contral. Meanwhile, there is tension in other areas.

Entretanto can also be used as a noun in the phrase en el entretanto, in the meantime, in the meanwhile:

En el entretanto ha llovido mucho y el agua ha enfriado los ánimos.
In the meantime there’s been a lot of rain, and everyone has cooled down.
