You can use especial in many similar contexts to English special.

La sociedad debe prestarles especial atención.
Society needs to pay them special attention.

Notice how you use it in the phrase en especial to mean especially or particularly:

su expansión en Latinoamérica, en especial en el mercado brasileño
its expansion in Latin America, and particularly or especially in the Brazilian market.

You can also translate it as in particular:

¿Desea ver a alguien en especial?
Do you want to see anybody in particular?
