Adriatic 
sea east of Italy, from L. Adriaticus, from town of Atria (modern Atri) in Picenum, from atra, neut. of atrum "black," hence "the black city." The masc. proper name Adrian is from L. Adrianus/Hadrianus, lit. "of the Adriatic."
