Cape Hatteras [(hat-uhr-uhs)]

Promontory on Hatteras Island off North Carolina, a low, sandy barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.

Note: Called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” because of the frequent storms that drive ships landward to their destruction.
