a white to yellowish-white, gelatinous, water-insoluble substance obtained from the wax secreted by certain insects, especially a Chinese scale (Ericerus pela): used chiefly in the manufacture of polishes, sizes, and candles.
Also called Chinese tree wax, insect wax.
